[April 9, 2025 – Abuja]
In a strategic move to reposition the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, eleven sitting PDP governors held a high-level closed-door meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, sending a clear signal that Nigeria’s main opposition party is far from retreating.
The meeting, hosted at the Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Lodge, brought together key figures from the party’s top leadership — a rare show of unity in a party long plagued by internal rifts and power tussles.
The Governors in Attendance
The governors present included:
- Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom) – Host
- Douye Diri (Bayelsa)
- Bala Mohammed (Bauchi)
- Seyi Makinde (Oyo)
- Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa)
- Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau)
- Peter Mbah (Enugu)
- Dauda Lawal (Zamfara)
- Agbu Kefas (Taraba)
- Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers) (currently suspended pending legal review)
- Ademola Adeleke (Osun)
A representative of the National Working Committee (NWC) and PDP Board of Trustees members were also present to ensure alignment with party structures.
Strategic Agenda Unveiled
In a communique issued after the meeting, the governors emphasized the need to strengthen internal democracy, reclaim lost strongholds, and unite under a common banner to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
“We are charting a new course — one that places the interest of Nigerians above personal ambition,” the statement read. “The PDP is poised to offer a credible alternative that will restore economic stability, national unity, and accountability in governance.”
Sources at the meeting disclosed that discussions included:
- Electoral reforms and INEC accountability
- A harmonized strategy to resolve lingering state-level crises
- A potential presidential consensus candidate for 2027
- Mass grassroots mobilization beginning in Q3 2025
Makinde: 'We’re Not Divided, We’re Focused'
Addressing the press, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo said, “People think the PDP is broken — that’s not true. We are focused, deliberate, and determined. What we started in 1999 isn’t over. We are coming back stronger.”
Governor Bala Mohammed, who chaired the session, stressed the importance of presenting “a unified front and a clear vision Nigerians can believe in again.”
Obi Factor & Alliances?
Though the meeting centered on PDP matters, whispers of potential alliances with Peter Obi’s Labour Party and other third-force movements were not far off. One insider told Audoz Buzz, “If 2023 taught us anything, it’s that no party can win big without strategic partnerships.”
What This Means
The rare gathering of eleven PDP governors — each commanding sizable influence in their regions — marks a turning point in the party’s post-2023 recovery. With the APC facing economic and political headwinds, the PDP is hoping to present a united, revitalized front that can capitalize on rising public frustration.
As 2027 draws closer, all eyes will be on whether these governors can keep their promise — and turn political meetings into electoral momentum.
Audoz Buzz will be tracking every step.
