Truck Falls Off Lagos Bridge, Crushes Two Passenger Buses

Lagos, Nigeria — April 27, 2025

In a tragic incident that has left many in shock, a truck lost control and plunged off a bridge in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos on Saturday evening, crushing two fully loaded passenger buses beneath it.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. when the truck, believed to be carrying heavy goods, veered off the bridge railing and fell directly onto the buses waiting in traffic below. Screams erupted from bystanders as chaos unfolded on one of Lagos’ busiest corridors.

Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the police, swiftly arrived at the scene. Rescue operations lasted several hours as workers used cranes and cutting equipment to extricate victims trapped under the wreckage.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed that several individuals were injured and rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for urgent medical attention. As of the time of this report, two fatalities have been officially confirmed.

"We are working tirelessly to ensure the area is cleared and to provide necessary support to the affected families," Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu said in a press briefing at the scene.

The identity of the truck driver remains unknown, as authorities are investigating whether brake failure or reckless driving contributed to the accident. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has vowed to enforce stricter checks on overloaded trucks using city bridges.

Eyewitnesses described the harrowing moments immediately after the crash. “It was like a movie," said Chidi Nwosu, a commercial bus driver who witnessed the fall. "One minute the truck was struggling to stay on the bridge, the next minute it tumbled over and landed with a thunderous crash. People started running and shouting everywhere."

Traffic in the area was gridlocked for hours as diversions were set up to facilitate rescue operations. LASTMA officials urged motorists to avoid the Ojuelegba axis and seek alternative routes until further notice.

The tragedy has reignited public outcry over the frequent movement of heavy-duty trucks on Lagos bridges and highways, with many calling for stricter regulations and better infrastructure safety measures.

Authorities have promised a full investigation into the incident, with results expected in the coming days.
